Former Nevada Assembly Woman
The daughter of immigrants, Lucy grew up in North Las Vegas. When Lucy was 9, her mother left, leaving Lucy to care for her siblings. Lucy fell in with the wrong crowd and slipped through the cracks, eventually ending up on juvenile parole and dropping out of school. But through hard work and the investment of people who believed in her, she got her GED, enrolled in community college and earned her degree from USC. From there, she worked her way through law school at the UNLV Boyd School of Law. In her last year of law school, Lucy successfully ran for office to represent her community becoming the first Latina elected to the Nevada Legislature. Lucy doesn’t have the background of a typical politician, but she has experienced firsthand the difference an investment in people can make. Ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed regardless of background is what inspired her to serve and what inspires her social justice work every day. Lucy continues to be a political leader serving as a founding board member on Our Revolution, a national political advocacy organization founded by Senator Bernie Sanders. Lucy also provides political commentary on national media outlets, and serves as the Vice President of Public Affairs at mitú, a digital media company that reaches 17 million Latinx and multicultural youth and millennials daily.
